The "ClimOp" Project was Supported By Horizon 2020 Programme:

Istanbul Technical University is a partner and Prof.Dr.Gokhan Inalhan and Assist Prof.Dr. Emre Koyuncu from Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics are the coordinators of the project  entitled “ClimOp: Climate Assessment of Innovative Mitigation Strategies Towards Operational Improvements in Aviation”, which is supported by the European Union Horizon 2020 Program "LC-MG-1-6-2019: Aviation operations impact on climate change".

The project, which started in September 2019, has duration of 42 months. The total budget of the project is 3 million 65 thousand Euro, and the budget of Istanbul Technical University (ITU) is 236,250 Euro. 2 academic and 6 industrial stakeholders from 5 countries are involved in the project partnership. Project partners: Deep Blue, ITU, DLR, NLR, IATA, AMIGO Climate and Istanbul New Airport (IGA) Enterprise.

Prof.Dr.Gokhan Inalhan and Assist Prof.Dr. Emre Koyuncu have coordinated the project with the involvement of graduate and doctoral students of ITU Aerospace Technology Application and Research Center (ITU ARC).

As part of the project, detailed analysis of how aviation operations are affected, especially due to global climate change in the world, as well as problems caused by these effects (safety, cost, resource need, etc.) it is planned to make scientific inferences about how it can be solved operationally, what are the optimal solutions for different situations. In this project, ITU will work on establishing a network model of air traffic throughout Europe, analyzing the effects caused by climatic factors in this model and optimizing different operational modes through this model.
